Notes to contributors to the Journal of Rural Economics (“NogyoKeizaiKenkyu”)

(General Rules)
Voluntary submission of manuscripts for the Journal of Rural Economics (“Nogyo Keizai Kenkyu”) (hereinafter referred to as the “Journal”) shall be made in accordance with these Rules.
(Eligibility for Submission)
The first author of the manuscript shall be a member of the Society, except in cases otherwise specifically permitted by the editorial committee.
(Categories of Manuscripts)
The types of manuscripts that can appear in the Journal include papers, conference reports, “research reviews,” “book reviews,” “new data and materials,” columns “from the academic saloon” (“danwashitsu”), and any other articles specifically permitted by the editorial committee.
“Papers” shall mean manuscripts illustrating theoretical and demonstrative research outcomes related to the rural economy that are found to be novel, creative and useful.
“Conference reports” shall mean manuscripts illustrating reports and Q&As from the annual conference symposium and the special symposium sponsored by the Society, and shall also include a message from the president and the preliminary explanation of the chairperson of the symposium.
“Research reviews” shall mean manuscripts highlighting a specific subject related to the field of rural economics, primarily from the standpoint of usefulness and in reference to prior research.
“Book reviews” shall mean manuscripts depicting the reviewer’s independent opinions on certain books on outcomes on rural economics, from the aspects of such books’ meanings and roles in the field of rural economics. The reviewed books shall also include books published by non-members.
“New data and materials” shall mean manuscripts containing useful information on rural economics and the Society’s activities.
Columns “from the academic saloon” (“danwashitsu”) shall mean manuscripts depicting the members’ opinions related to the Society’s activities.
The manuscripts shall include the unsolicited manuscripts submitted by members, and the manuscripts submitted in response to solicitation by the editorial committee.
(Requirement for Manuscripts)
All manuscripts shall be unpublished manuscripts. No manuscripts already submitted to other journals shall be accepted.
(Length of Manuscripts)
The papers shall be no more than 20,000 characters (including figures) in length, at the time of the initial submission.
Conference reports shall be subject to the same limitations as papers; and the length of Q&As and other manuscripts shall be determined according to the actual situation of the symposium.
“Research reviews” shall be subject to the same limitations as papers.
Book reviews shall be no more than 4,000 characters (including figures) in length.
“New data and materials” shall be no more than 12,000 characters (including figures) in length.
Columns “from the academic saloon” (“danwashitsu”) shall be no more than 2,000 characters (including figures) in length.
(Copyrights)
Ownership and other issues related to the copyrights of the works appearing in the Journal shall be as set forth in the Rules on Copyrights of The Agricultural Economics Society of Japan.
(Language)
Manuscripts shall be written in Japanese.
(Format of Manuscript)
The format of manuscripts to be complied with by the contributors shall be as set forth in the detailed regulations.
(Process of Submission)
For submission, the manuscript text (one original and three copies) and one copy of a cover letter shall be sent to the editorial committee by registered mail or any other means that provides proof of dispatchment.

Manuscripts may also be submitted online. For online submission, an electronic copy of a cover letter and manuscript text prepared in pdf format shall be sent to the following e-mail address:

If the manuscript is accepted for publication, the contributor shall, upon the notification thereof from the secretariat of the editorial committee, send to the editorial committee the final version of the manuscript with an electronic copy attached.
(Date of Receipt of Manuscript)
The date of receipt of the manuscript shall be the date when the manuscript arrives at the editorial committee.
(Returning and Preservation of Manuscript)
Submitted manuscripts will not be returned. The author shall keep copies (including electronic copies) of all manuscripts, including the author’s final version, in preparation against incidents such as the loss of manuscripts during delivery.
(Judgment on Whether to Accept a Manuscript for Publication)
Whether to accept a manuscript for publication shall be determined by the editorial committee in accordance with the examination rules to be prescribed separately.
(Date of Acceptance of Manuscript)
The date of acceptance of a manuscript shall be the date when the editorial committee judges the manuscript to be acceptable for publication.
(Proofreading by Authors)
The author is allowed to read the proofs only once. The author may not make any addition or modification to the manuscript other than typographical errors, without special permission from the editorial committee.
(Proofreading of English Texts)
The editorial committee shall first proofread the English title and abstracts, and then the editorial committee and the author shall proofread them based upon mutual consultation.
(Offprints)
If a manuscript is accepted for publication, twenty complimentary copies of the offprint will be provided to the authors of the paper, etc. If the author wishes to obtain twenty one copies or more, the author is required to pay the fee for extra copies. In such case, the author shall order the number of copies required when he/she carries out proofreading.
(Supplementary Provisions)
Any amendments to these Notes shall be made by the Board of Directors, and shall be publicized in the Society’s journals, the Society’s websites, etc.
This provision shall be enforced as from April 1, 2010.
